Activity limitation: a major consequence of dyspnoea in COPD.

چکیده
I n the present issue of the European Respiratory Review, JOLLEY and MOXHAM [1] present ‘‘A physiological model of patient-reported breathlessness during daily activities in COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease]’’. The purpose of their interesting approach is to explain why a given patient may experience breathlessness in some particular situations of his/her daily life, based on the various possible mechanisms of dyspnoea in COPD. This understanding may obviously help in building individualised relieving strategies through counselling and education, occupational therapy, pharmacological agents and physical training.

Sex-related differences in COPD in five Latin American cities: the PLATINO study.
There is evidence to suggest sex differences exists in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) clinical expression. We investigated sex differences in health status perception, dyspnoea and physical activity, and factors that explain these differences using an epidemiological sample of subjects with and without COPD. PLATINO is a cross-sectional, population-based study. We defined COPD as ...
متن کاملRespiratory Response to BiPAP Aided Upper Limb Exercise in Hypercapanic COPD Patients
COPD is characterized by airflow limitation and reduced exercise capacity. Airflow limitation is usually progressive and associated with symptoms such as dyspnoea, excessive sputum production and chronic cough [2]. Dyspnoea and fatigue are the two most common symptoms experienced by patients with COPD [3]. While dyspnoea has been traditionally considered the primary symptom in COPD patients, re...
متن کاملNo room to breathe: the importance of lung hyperinflation in COPD.
Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are progressively limited in their ability to undertake normal everyday activities by a combination of exertional dyspnoea and peripheral muscle weakness. COPD is characterised by expiratory flow limitation, resulting in air trapping and lung hyperinflation. Hyperinflation increases acutely under conditions such as exercise or exacerbat...
متن کاملPrevalence and Burden of Breathlessness in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Managed in Primary Care
BACKGROUND & AIMS Breathlessness is a primary clinical feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We aimed to describe the frequency of and factors associated with breathlessness in a cohort of COPD patients identified from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), a general practice electronic medical records database. METHODS Patients with a record of COPD diagnosis afte...
متن کاملSex-related Differences of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Impact on Life Quality: the Platino Study.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a highly prevalent condition worldwide, with a significant impact on general morbidity and mortality and, also, on health care costs. The PLATINO study group of authors investigated recently if the clinical evolution of COPD may be different on a sex-related basis. An epidemiological sample of unselected population (5314 subjects from five Latin A...
